Enjoy a second photo gallery of Daily Herald reader-submitted photos of their pets adopted during the pandemic. Pet adoptions were up in 2020 at many suburban rescues and shelters.


Fourth grade teacher Ann Bond of Wheaton said it was a good time to get a puppy once schools shut down due to the pandemic. There were a couple Havanese and poodle mix puppies to choose from but went with Palmer because of her unique white paw. They picked Palmer up in Missouri who is named after the golf legend Arnold Palmer. Bond says Palmer is the positive of this pandemic and they can't remember life without her.

Roger Henry of Geneva rescued a Siamese cat named Frankie from Springfield, Ill. at the start of the pandemic. Frankie likes to watch YouTube videos and his favorite is entitled "Birds on a Log."

Dan and Emily Jamieson of Palatine adopted Chadwick "Moose", right, on Nov. 27, 2020 from Fetching Tails Foundation. Chadwick was previously picked up by Chicago's animal control. Chadwick is a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier weighing 85 pounds. He joins Brandy "Bear" who was adopted by the Jamieson's eight years ago.

Emma is a 9-year-old black Labrador who loves to go walks and has given the Teusher's a lot of joy. Emma is pictured with her favorite pandemic toy, a cardboard toilet paper roll.

Brian and Samantha Hampe of Mount Prospect adoped Kona from Heartland Animal Shelter the weekend  Illinois shut down. A DNA test showed Kona is part American bulldog, pit bull, Labrador, beagle and boxer. She was the dog of honor in the Hampe's July wedding.

Former Wheaton resident Carly Blake adopted her Shih Zhu named Biscuit when he was 10-weeks-old while staying with her parents in March. Once the COVID-19 daily numbers went down, she took Biscuit back to New York where she currently lives.

Jessica Brochtrup of Campton Hills said her boys, Caleb, Cole, and Austin Brochtrup adopted a leopard gecko named Sniper from Critters pet shop last summer. "Sniper's former owners were no longer able to care for him, and our boys were thrilled to have a new pet. Sniper enjoys eating meal worms and crickets" Brochtrup said.

Ed and Susan McNeal-Bulak of Naperville said their son, Ethan Bulak of Chicago, adopted his first dog, Toby, on October 3, 2020. Toby is a black Labrador mix and was adopted from Animal House Shelter in McHenry.

Pam Butenshen of Prospect Heights adopted Shorty from Midwest Greyhounds in June 2020. Shorty is a greyhound who was at a racetrack in Birmingham Alabama. She was a regular winner and would most likely still be at the track had they not shutdown due to the pandemic.

Mike and Carol of Libertyville have never owned a dog during their 48 years of marriage. But they saw a photo of Wilma at Reach Rescue in Mundelein they fell in love. Wilma is part border collie and is named after Carol's mother's name and her middle name. She was a stray picked up in Oklahoma.

Terrence Conroy of Lake Barrington spent a lot of time hiking with his dog, Kiya, in the Flint Creek Savanna in Lake Barrington and The Hollows in Cary. Conroy said he witnessed a lot more people on the trail and families spending more time together.

The Doctor Family of Arlington Heights adopted Kiwie, a heeler, pointer and Labrador mix from Florida early in the pandemic. Their kitten, Skinnie, was adopted from Spay and Stay animal rescue near Libertyville. Kerry Doctor said that once Kiwie learned Skinnie was not a squirrel, they got along just fine.

Wrigley is a Labradoodle and Theresa Fugitt said it was a perfect time to adopt since she has been working more at home due to the pandemic. The 4-year-old Labrador and pit bull mix was rescued from Georgia where she was used as a bait dog for dog fighting. Schmalfeld said the staff and volunteers work hard to rescue as many dogs as possible, with most go directly to foster homes.Courtesy of
